Choose the proper equipment:
Choosing the proper equipment to your golf course relates the golf rules and etiquette you need to know. The first rule is the limitation of 14 clubs in the bag of each golfer. Although you aren’t required the minimum number of golf clubs, it’s not ideal to borrow these from your partners. In some certain circumstances, you are allowed to borrow clubs in around. But, in the common games, this means against the rules. Thus, it’s best to bring your own clubs.
Even if you don’t have to take part in a serious game and follow the rules strictly, you shouldn’t borrow the equipment. It’s ok with cheap bag and used clubs but they must be your own.
Be sure that your golf bag comes with several tees and the most important thing is golf balls.
It’s hard to avoid losing many balls for the first time out so you should bring a ball mark repair tool. You can buy at most of the professional shops.
Make a tee time:
For the first golf round, perhaps you would like to spend more time to tee. If this is what you want, just call the golf course before one day or earlier (this depends on the policy of your course) to request a specific time.
It’s safe to get your golf course earlier 30 minutes or an hour for a nice warm up. In case you miss the tee time, you must wait until there is another tee time. Though you aren’t required to have a tee time, getting one is always a good idea. In case you come to the course early, don’t waste your time. At that time, you can hit some golf balls on the driving range.
Dress the part:
Dress codes are pretty popular in most of the golf courses. Thus, you need to learn what the dress code is on your golf course appropriately. Normally, they include slacks or a pair of khaki shorts, and a collared golf shirt. You had better have both a pair of golf shoes and golf gloves, although golf shoes are not a must.
Pay attention that not all golf courses come with a dress code so you need to check first. The easiest way to determine if that dress code usually appears in the expensive golf courses.
Arrive and tee off:
After parking and before entering the golf course, you should find out the professional shop entrance where you would like to check in, pay, and pick up the scorecard especially staff here will provide some information you need to know. If there aren’t any signs of the pro shop entrance, don’t worry and follow what other golfers do.
When it comes to tee time, what you need to do is to put the golf ball between the tee markers on the teeing ground. Usually, tee markers are small things such as small and colored cones or stones.
Take honors away and ready to play:
Players with “honors” usually have the first play on the teeing ground. Their first tee will be decided accidentally by draw straws, play paper-rock-scissors. On the next tee, the position of players on holes will depend on their score. And that place will be kept in the next rotation until you win someone.
“Honors” will determine the player teeing first. To know the playing order on shots from the fairway, the player must be away or out to lead the way. Generally, the first player is farthest from the hole or from the golf course’s any position than the tee box. Are there any exceptions? Yes. That case is that all members of a group agree to play “hit-when-ready” (ready golf) for speeding up the round.
Play as it lies:
There is an idea that most of the golf rules are built around the most fundamental principle “play it as it lies.” Simply, players aren’t allowed to move or touch the golf ball. Obviously, there are some exceptions. However, keep in mind this rule of thumb: don’t move, touch even pick the ball up if you aren’t allowed. For example, you can pick up to clean it when the ball is on the putting green.
In fact, whether you are the beginner or experienced golfer, it’s frequent to ignore the golf rules which help you play faster, more convenient especially you don’t easily end up losing the golf ball and strokes.
Lose the golf ball and out of bounds:
You can easily see out-of-bounds which are clearly marked by white lines or white stakes. Stroke-plus-distance is the penalty for OB. That means adding a stroke to your score after that comeback place where you hit to do that again.
Obviously, you need more time for that. You can’t have too much time in a busy golf course since perhaps there is another group that is waiting for you. Therefore, when hitting a golf ball out of bounds, you will need a second ball – provisional ball off the tee so that you don’t have to retrace the steps in case your first ball is OB.
Remember to announce your partners that this is a provisional ball before you re-tee. This should be performed after other people make their provisional tee ball. You can play your first ball if you find out it in bounds. On the contrary, if you can’t or find out it out of bounds, a provisional ball ought to be your option. Apply this for lost balls which your ball goes deep into the forest. The penalty for this case is usually stroke-plus-distance.
Keep up the pace:
The main problem in the golf course is always playing slow. Thus, for beginners, it’s really essential and important to know the playing pace. No one wants to let other players behind wait too long. The feeling likes you can’t wait for the playing groups ahead too long. Thus, you should always be in prepared condition when it’s your turn.
